A Brief History of the Hochhausers
The first known Hochhauser was Zev Wolf, who built a synagogue in Labowa Galicia in 1805. We know of five children: Yosef, Moshe, Tzvi Hersh, Menachem Mendel and Shmuel (some accounts add a sixth Yeshaya), Zev Wolf’s son, Menachem Mendel, renovated the synagogue and added a women’s section in 1835. The family spread to surrounding towns and cities such as Nowy Sacz (Sanz in Yiddish) and many became followers of the Chassidic Rebbe Rabbi Chaim Halberstam, known as the Sanzer Rebbe and Divrei Chaim. Some later became followers of the Bobover Rebbe, Rabbi Shlomo Halberstam. Others moved south to Czechoslovakia in and around the city of Kosice. In the 1880s, family members started imigrating to the United States. This continued up to WWII. During the holocaust, some Hochhausers managed to flee Europe. After the war the few who survived also went to various countries, including US, Israel, and England.
